Arsenal’s situation is going to reach hazard status if they continue to put off answering key questions. Jean Michael Seri is just another to pass them by.

Arsenal didn’t enter the summer with a lot of needs. One got answered right away in Sead Kolasinac. As it stands, with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in place and the 3-4-2-1 clicking, the attack is in good shape. Arsene Wenger seems to be on his game going all out for Alexandre Lacazette and Kylian Mbappe.

But the key phrase in that last paragraph is “as it stands,” because for all we know, it may not stand this way in a couple of months. That huge list of  players that are out of contract in 2018 has not gotten any shorter.

Meanwhile, a lot of the options that Arsenal was looking at – Corention Tolisso, Jean Michael Seri, etc – are being snapped up by other, more decisive teams. Meaning that if, heaven forbid, Alexis decides to move on, we may hear that all-too-familiar saying from Wenger again, claiming that there is no quality on the market.

That’s because all the quality is being taken while we diddle around with contract negotiations. Jean Micheal Seri, another premium option, has supposedly agreed on a move to Roma.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That in and of itself isn’t devastating news. But couple it with Tolisso’s move to Bayern, Andre Silva’s move to AC Milan and suddenly, a lot of realistic options are passing us by without us even knowing who will be on the team come next season and beyond.

Far be it from me to claim to know what this team needs, but one thing I do know – one thing we should all know – is that while we do not necessarily depend on either Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or any of the other players whose deals run up in 2018, we would have to match their exit with a purchase, because the current stock cannot cover for their departures.

That will be difficult to do if all the good options are gone. And all of the good options will most certainly be gone if we can’t lock anyone down and then they decide to leave, leaving Wenger to pick up the pieces with a depleted transfer market.

I truly hope that Arsene Wenger knows what he is doing. If all of these 2018 contract vagabonds are going to re-up and he knows that, then more power to him, let these guys go to other teams. I prefer Alexis anyway. But if there is any doubt in his mind that these players are not going to re-sign, then we are going to be in one hell of a pickle down the road.
