Arsene Wenger seems happy with his midfield options, spurning the chance to improve his squad in the transfer window. The expected progression of Aaron Ramsey can make up for such inactivity.

Entering last season, one of the key strengths of the Arsenal, or at least what we all considered to be one of the strengths, was the numerous options in central midfield. Arsene Wenger himself agreed, seeing it fit to allow Jack Wilshere to depart on loan as he felt that he could not give the midfielder enough game time as he looked to prove his fitness.

However, for a variety of different reasons, from crippling injury issues to losses of form to untimely international tournaments, in the latter half of the season, Wenger was having to turn to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain because of the lack of options he had available.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That has led many to believe that key investment is needed in the position this summer. However, while there is a great need for Wenger to spend money on a number of different areas in the squad, I believe that central midfield is not one of them. The reason is a simple one: Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey is a player yet to fulfil his potential. He has shown in glimpses how good he can be. However, primarily thanks to injuries, he has been able to consistently perform at the level that is hoped of him. But Ramsey himself believes that he and his teammates can go on to win more silverware next season after their remarkable FA Cup final win to close last year, stating that he is ‘always trying to improve’:

"“It means a lot for us to win silverware and having something to show for your hard work. Hopefully there will be some more next season. I love the competition and to score another FA cup winner was a great feeling – it’s living out your childhood dreams. We really wanted to finish the season on a high. We gave everything on the day to make sure we left that pitch with the trophy. I’m always trying to improve as a player and will continue to try to do that.”"

And it is the anticipated improvement of Ramsey that will negate the need for more investment. The Welshman has the talent and the ability to become a domineering, all-conquering midfielder, the driving force in the Arsenal engine, distributing with accuracy and tempo, bounding from box to box.

There is just one issue. His fitness. Whether Arsenal can rely on his injury record or not, only time will tell. But signing a new player will only proceed to cramp the squad and restrict Ramsey’s opportunities. He has the ability, he just needs the luck and the reliability.
