Arsenal are inching towards the signings of Thomas Lemar and Alexandre Lacazette. Would the two additions constitute a successful summer transfer window?

Shortly after the remarkable FA Cup final win in which Arsenal dismantled Premier League champions Chelsea in a blistering display, Arsene Wenger, in rather controversial fashion, and the club agreed on a new two-year deal, extending his 21-year reign in North London.

It was a decision that was not welcomed with open arms from the fan base. There has been a growing unease in and around the Emirates, with a particular angst against the regime of Wenger and Stan Kroenke, who are assumed to be more interested in the club’s turnover than the trophies in the trophy cabinet.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

To try and calm such fears and reason such concerns, Wenger, Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis, and Kroenke stated, in the perfectly prim and proper way that they have always done, spouting the twisted, contorted, contrived PR that so wonderful delineates what the fans want to hear, rather than what will be, that the club will be ambitious, chasing titles, qualifying for the Champions League and challenging Europe’s elite.

But for how many years have we heard such manufactured propaganda? Fans are beginning to wake up to the façade that Arsenal have engineered for themselves and are now, in their droves, choosing to actively seek out evidence of their claims. Well, if recent reports are to be believed, there is the chance that the Gunners may well be answering such scrutiny.

The question of ambition has often rested on the club’s activity, or lack thereof, in the transfer window. They have consistently failed to spend as is necessary to keep pace with the Manchester Citys and the Chelseas of this world.

However, there are now significant rumours suggesting that Wenger is growing in confidence that the acquisitions of both Alexandre Lacazette and Thomas Lemar can be completed in the coming weeks. But would the vibrant French duo constitute success? Do they vindicate the PR that we all had to swallow as we entered the summer?

In context, I believe they do. It was never going to be easy for Wenger to convince players to come to a club that is slipping behind; there is no Champions League football, a souring atmosphere around the club, and a stagnant and rotting squad.

Lacazette and Lemar may not be the high-profile, shut-the-front-door, gobsmacking deals that many had been hoping for. But that does not mean they are poor additions by any stretch of the imagination. Complimented by astute business elsewhere in the window, especially in terms of the retention of current players, the duo would be successful.
