Arsenal have signed Alexandre Lacazette. The move has been described as a dream by the French striker, showing that the Gunners can still attract top players.

Last season was an extremely underwhelming one for Arsenal and their hopeful fans. After a dazzling start to the year, during which they dismantled Chelsea in a blistering display to sit atop the Premier League, it was thought that a sustained and genuine title challenge could be enjoyed. How wrong we all were.

Arsene Wenger’s side proceeded to endure a horrifying run of poor performances and results, ultimately slipping out of the top four, suffering a humiliating exit in the Champions League and only managing to save face a little thanks to an extraordinary FA Cup win, overcoming Premier League champions Chelsea in the final.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

But, as the campaign drew to a close, the overriding feeling was one of trepidation and worry, especially regarding the club’s ability to, not only attract some of the top players across the continent, but also retain many of the more prominent figures in the squad. However, such concerns have been somewhat settled with the early business of the club, namely, the sensational club-record addition of Alexandre Lacazette, which was officially announced on Wednesday afternoon.

To add to the comforting of those worries, Lacazette was keen to highlight the desire that he had to play in England, and specifically Arsenal, picking out the role Wenger, the style that he dictates and the success that he has enjoyed with French players as key reasons for wanting to make the switch to North London:

"“The fact that the manager has been here for a while shows that it is a stable club which I like. In addition there are quite a few French players here, which makes it easier to settle in. In my opinion, Arsenal is also the club that plays the best football in England so I really wanted to come here.”"

While Lacazette is not perhaps a name on the level of a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Edinson Cavani, that does not mean he was a player in any less demand. He has proven his exuberant goalscoring ability over an extended period with Lyon and was the subject of intense interest from Atletico Madrid, who likely would have secured his signature had it not been for an untimely transfer embargo.
