Arsenal will be landing Alexandre Lacazette soon, which hearkens back to the time Tottenham severely underrated him and subsequently failed to land him.

Arsenal’s deal for Alexandre Lacazette looks to be all wrapped up, barring the official announcement from the club, which should literally be happening any minute (as I write. God-willing it’ll be announced by the time this article goes live).

HITC did some excellent digging, coming up with to old reports that Tottenham were only willing to pay £24m for Lacazette two years ago, meaning that their valuation of him was incredibly low, which just goes to show how cockeyed they were in landing a second striker. Vincent Janssen isn’t exactly helping this situation get any better.

And, as HITC points out, remember that this is the same team that spent £30m on Moussa Sissoko. Go ahead and laugh, it’s okay. I’m laughing too.

What this comes down to, I believe, is that the Spurs knew that Lacazette was out of their league. No matter what the Gunners struggles are, no matter where they finish in the league, they will always be the more attractive destination for players, so barring a player having a bizarre desire to land with the lesser side of North London, they can’t compete with Arsenal.

You could see the same with Thomas Lemar and the reports that he was holding out for the Gunners to make an approach, while essentially wholly dismissing Tottenham’s interest. Keep in mind that Tottenham finished second (putting some trophy-worthy pressure on Chelsea) while the Gunners finished in their worst position in two decades.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Also, think about what would have happened the year after this paltry valuation of Lacazette. Spurs would go on to be in a two-horse race with Leicester, a race that saw them finishing third as the Gunners came and pipped second place.

Meaning that this whole assessment is completely justified.

Of course rival fans are bantering on Twitter that Lacazette is a silly club-record signing. Of course, it’s mostly Manchester United fans saying that. I guess they are proud of their Paul Pogba signing or something.

Tottenham could not have landed Lacazette even if the bid had been enough. They proved that then and they knew that now, they wouldn’t have a chance to land him. That’s why they are sticking with Janssen, whose inaugural year was something of a dud. That is the kind of striker they are going to attract. Not worldly talents like Lacazette, who have golden boots to his name.

We’ve given the Spurs their flirtations with “success,” now it’s time to marvel as Lacazette drives Arsenal past the North London sideshow yet again.
