Arsenal can’t turn Calum Chambers into another Serge Gnabry

Arsenal certainly has a wealth of defenders, young and old, but selling Calum Chambers still makes absolutely zero sense and needs to be put out of mind.

Arsenal’s plethora of defensive talent is something to marvel at. They have a solid array of veteran experience and youthful exuberance. So much so that for the next oh, decade or so, there really isn’t that much to worry about so long as they keep hold of everyone they currently have.

Which includes Calum Chambers.

Reports indicate that Crystal Palace have submitted a £16m bid for the services of Calum Chambers. And all I want to know is how many ways can Arsenal say no?

But it also got me a bit concerned. They were so quick to part with Wojciech Szczesny, which was wholly unnecessary, and despite doing ‘all they could’ they sold off Serge Gnabry pretty easily too. Neither move is particularly inspiring when considering the fact that Chambers has not had a big role to play in the first team. And while the loan to Middlesbrough was supposed to fix that, so too was Gnabry’s loan to West Brom.

Chambers loan went just a tad bit better, but  still. Calum Chambers would be another Serge Gnabry if he were to be sold off this summer for absolutely no reason.

Of course there are differences. Gnabry was a lad with the Arsenal youth system, Calum wasn’t, but the overarching plot is the same – a talented young player who had his first team chance, did pretty well, then fell on hard times and was never given that second chance to prove himself.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Selling Chambers has no benefit. I have been beyond excited to see Chambers, Mustafi and Holding hold down that back line with Koscielny moves on because all three have proven in some facet or another that they are capable of doing the job.

It’s pointless to sell them unless we want to do Crystal Palace a favor by giving them an Arsenal-quality center back. And there is no reason to do this. None whatsoever.

Make no mistake about it, Chambers is absolutely Arsenal quality. He was a pillar on a surprisingly stout Boro defense that was under siege constantly. And before that, he was making a strong resurgence with the Gunners.

Now that there are three slots for defenders, Chambers has a better chance than ever before. At the bare minimum he will be on the rotated defensive line, constantly proving himself to be capable of more.

I probably don’t need to say this, but this can’t happen. There is enough regret  over Gnabry, why would we want to engage in more?
