Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez seem to be doomed to split, but let’s get one thing clear, the Chilean does not ‘deserve better’ than what he has.

Arsenal struggled to find any hope of consistency last year and as a result, there were many fans asserting that if Alexis Sanchez were to leave, they’d be okay with it because he ‘deserves’ a better team.

I allowed myself to explore this sentiment for awhile before coming back empty. There is no such thing as Alexis deserving better than what he has, plain and simple.

If he wants to win the Champions League, then the only gripe he can have at Arsenal is that he didn’t go to Real Madrid instead. You don’t see Chelsea or Manchester City challenging the Champions League. And sure, we missed out, that’s fine, but Wenger said it best, for 20 years they made the Champions League. Three with Alexis. Now they missed it – also with Alexis.

How do you exclude yourself from the team’s failings? Because you scored a lot of goals? That’s not how it works.

So what, would he have fared any better at City? Nope. Arsenal as a team struggled. He was part of that team. He rejoiced in their success when they snatched second place, now he is seemingly isolating himself from their struggles the next year.

Or, let’s say you think he does deserve better. What qualifies as better? Manchester City? Who have won one League Cup during Alexis’s time at Arsenal, while the Gunners have won two FA Cups with him? Who have come no closer to winning the Champions League? Is that better? A team with no history and only a blip of success?

Or is Bayern Munich better? A team that wins their domestic league by default every year? Does Alexis want a challenge to improve himself, or to fall into complacency of thinking he has it all? Bayern can only get him so far and if his personal ambitions are as untamed as he says they are, he won’t find satisfaction at Bayern.

Is PSG better? Another team that wins their domestic league by default or, when they don’t, there is massive surprise.

The latter two are teams whose ceiling is about a foot above Alexis’s head. Manchester City maybe a bit more than that but at Arsenal, the ceiling is boundless. It isn’t a trendy team that spends big to boost shirt sales. It’s a team that invests, that builds towards a future and that has a history that is just waiting to be re-opened.

Alexis can play a big part in that, or he can be just another sell out. Another guy who gave up his chance at being a legend, an actual substantial player, so that he could bury his lot in with all the other overpaid superstars of the world, none more distinguishable then the rest.

I don’t buy this ‘he deserves better’ crap. Wenger has spent gobs of money making the team better these past two years. The additions he has made rival those of all the major outfits out there. If he doesn’t want to be a part of something bigger then maybe he isn’t who I thought he was.
