Per a report in the Sun, Arsenal are closing in on a £45 million deal for Thomas Lemar. While believing the report may be difficult, if nothing else, it is damn exciting.

Signing new players is always exciting. Even if it is a player that you may not be so enamoured with or especially convinced by their quality, there are few more intriguing and entertaining sights than seeing a new signing in the red of Arsenal on the first day of the Premier League season, with the August sun basking them in the glory that they will strive for during their time there.

It is this sense of anticipation that surrounds Alexandre Lacazette. Even those who are a little more nervous and cautionary with regards to the impact that he will have in a new league with a new team against a higher level of competition must accept that they are looking forward to seeing him walk onto the Emirates pitch at the start of the new season.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

This feeling is only heightened thanks to Arsene Wenger’s hesitance to invest in the high-profile additions that fans crave. Because of this, when such players are actually signed, the excitement ripples through the crowd tenfold.

However, while Lacazette is an excellent addition, more is still needed and wanted. Wenger himself has admitted as much with the players that he has pursued in the aftermath of the Lacazette signing. The most prominent and featured target that Wenger has endeavoured to sign is Monaco winger Thomas Lemar, seeing several offers rejected for his services.

It was thought that the exodus of stars from the French club would deter from them selling another one of their growing stars. However, a report from The Sun claims that Arsenal are nearing a £45 million agreement after making a significant breakthrough in negotiations with Monaco.

Whether the report is believable or not is a very difficult question to answer. The Sun are far from a reputable source with a reliable track record and it is news that, as of writing, is yet to have circulated around the more credible media outlets.

However, whether you are willing to accept the validity and the accuracy of the rumours or not, it is difficult to deny the excitement that they bring. Lemar is certainly an exciting prospect. He is an outstanding talent, having scored nine and assisted a further 10 in Ligue 1 last campaign at the age of just 21, playing a major role in the blistering Monaco attack that took Europe by storm.

It would be scintillating to see him play alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, feeding balls through to Lacazette, floating in from wide positions, interlinking play and creating chances. While a move may never be completed, it is salivating to even think about. Here’s hoping.
