Manchester City have spend another small fortune on another Monaco player. Meanwhile Arsenal supporters are scratching their heads about Thomas Lemar.

Arsenal has been after Thomas Lemar for a month now. At the start, it looked like he may even arrive before Alexandre Lacazette, but now we are left wondering if he is even going to make it this summer.

Monaco have resolutely held to their assertion that they will not sell him. This in spite of the fact that they sold Bernardo Silva and now Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City and Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea.

Monaco claims they will always let young players have a chance with their club, yet all three players they sold were young. And so is Thomas Lemar.

The thing with the Mendy sale is that City had bids rejected from Monaco on their way to the deal. Reports claimed that Monaco would sell if City’s bid toppled £50m and lo and behold, as soon as it did, the speedy left back was shipped out.

Arsenal has also had bids for Lemar turned down, with similar reports stating that Monaco are looking for a fee of £55m in order to part with the young French creator.

The latest reports (from the independent) suggested that the Gunners most recent bid was in the are of £40m. That’s a bit far off of the asking price. Less reputable reports claimed that Arsenal had bid again, at £45m, but nothing emerged from that.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

There have to be some questions being asked now. It’s clear that Wenger wants Thomas Lemar and it’s clear that Monaco will sell, no questions asked, if their price is met. If that is the case, and if £55m really is the price to hit, then there is no excuse not to hit it. Plain and simple.

Wenger always tells us that for the right player, price doesn’t matter. Well, he has found the right player, clearly, because he has bid on him at least twice. Yet because of a monetary gap, the deal has not been completed.

There are even reports that Monaco were shocked by the initial £31m bid and that would absolutely the the appropriate response, especially after seeing so many Monaco players sold for far more than that.

The only thing that should matter is that it looks like Monaco will sell. They have sold so many players. And if feels like after each sale, they say ‘okay, we can’t sell anymore’ and then they well another.
