Arsenal was eyeing up some serious offloading this summer, but Arsene Wenger has started off the ‘dead weight’ sales by getting them all wrong.

This was always going to be an eventful summer for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger wasted no time getting started. But it wasn’t just the incoming stars that we were excited to see. It was also exciting to think that we were finally going to sell some of the dead weight that has been accumulating over the years.

Guys like Carl Jenkinson, Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs and more just don’t factor into the first team picture anymore, some haven’t in years, and they’ve been a waste of a spot that could be filled by a youngster or a new signing with the potential to actually do something.

And seeing who was left out of the preseason tour, it was clear who was going. Add to that list the unfortunate duo of Lucas Perez and Joel Campbell, who really should go bowling and discuss why they both mysteriously got the shaft without ever being given a proper chance.

The problem is that none of these dead weight players have been sold. There are barely any fluttering rumors of them being sold.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Instead, Wenger has sold 11-year Gunner product Wojciech Szczesny, who was choked up at the mic and left a message to all Gooners that will make your heart melt. Instead of letting those loans fuel a charge into the first team that he has always desired to be a part of, Wenger just let him go. And for a very small fee.

Meanwhile, Kieran Gibbs was recently bid £10m for (according to Sky Sports), which is a very solid fee, but it was rejected as the Gunners hold out for £12m.

And if you buy into the rumors, the next name on the chopping block is Calum Chambers, who is in the midst of a price negotiation between the Gunners and Crystal Palace. Chambers is about as far from dead weight as you are going to get. He’s young, immensely talented, gets on well with the team and, like Szczesny, has greatly impressed on loan.

Personally, I couldn’t wait to see him work his way into the back three and defend alongside our regular center backs.

Then there is Jack Wilshere, who seems to be cheering more for West Ham this summer than for Arsenal. Again though, Wilshere is not dead weight. When healthy he is a game changer. Unlike the actual dead weight players that are still speckled throughout the club.

I have no problem with selling players. I wish Wenger would do it more often. But damn, sell the right guys! Don’t see the ones that want to prove themselves more than anything or still have so much to give. That defeats the whole purpose.
