Arsenal has been after Thomas Lemar all damn summer, but Arsene Wenger’s new update hints that he is deploying a new and questionable strategy.

As of right now, Arsenal’s chances of landing Thomas Lemar are looking pretty slim. And should they fail to land him, I will be stopping in on all the ‘in the knows’ to have a chat about their definite claims that he was going to be signed. Hopefully it won’t come to that though. Hopefully they can still swarm in and claim their prized transfer.

There just hasn’t been a lot of reason to sprout optimism. And I consider myself an optimistic fellow who tried hard to pluck pieces of hope from every single update.

The Gunners have made sequential bids going from £31m up to the latest report of £45m but have been met with the same answer from various voices at Monaco each time – he isn’t for sale, bugger off (more or less).

Perhaps Arsene Wenger has spoiled us with his ability to land just about everyone he goes after, but this one just feels like we are beating our heads against the wall.

And the latest update from Wenger does not fill my optimistic self with woo much hope. It sounds like the Gunners will be taking a much more passive approach to their pursuit of Lemar. Here’s what Le Prof had to day in regards to what to expect from the rest of the transfer window (via Arsenal.com):

More from Pain in the Arsenal

"“We are active, we are working hard and I think we have done well with Kolasinac, we have done well with Lacazette and we are continuing to work. There’s the usual acceleration in the final part of August,” added Wenger, “But I think you have always to be on alert every day, because a good opportunity might turn up. Sometimes people you are after for a long time are not available and suddenly they become available. So you have always to be on alert. That’s what we do.”"

By ‘we are active’ he is simply saying that they are still open to more moves. I am instead focused on the bit where he said he is on alert, and that is what they will do – stay on the alert. Because right now, there is no other option.

They have been pushing for Lemar all summer, but here he admits that there are some players who are not available and for them, again, you just have to be on alert.

So it’s a waiting game with Lemar, and nothing more. We will be watching and hoping that Monaco soften their stance and, if not, better luck next year.
