Arsenal certainly still have intentions of making some moves this transfer window. But the options are dwindling as Jean Michael Seri fades.

When you sit around and think about it long enough, you can always find new theories on how Arsenal actually do need something else this transfer window. I was pretty convinced we needed Thomas Lemar to cover for Alexis Sanchez, but now that he feels like a distant hope, this attention is turning to another position.

And it is in this position of “need” that the links are popping up more and more.

In the base of the midfield sits a very stoic Granit Xhaka and a very prolific Aaron Ramsey. Behind them sits a duo of underwhelming in the form of Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny. One injury, or one suspension, and that duo is exposed.

Hard to hide from that. This isn’t really a contrived need, it is more of a safety-net need. And there are options. Unfortunately, one option remains as William Carvalho, but the other options that have hung around – Adrien Rabiot, Jean Michael Seri, Leon Goretzka – are the far superior options and the ones that should be focused on.

At this point, any of those three would suit the purpose. They are all quite different players, but the overall draw is the same – they are most certainly not one-dimensional. And that is the goal with this midfield, especially when trying to identify a target that can put pressure on the first team and, ideally, force his way into the starting XI, thereby strengthening everyone around him.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Well, one more potential savior may well be off the table. Jean Michael Seri was – according to the Metro – going to be allowed to leave if Nice missed out on the Champions League, but thanks to the away goal rule, they went through over Ajax.

It’s getting dicey here now, in the middle of the pitch. Where once their were so many options to fill a midfield void that may become much more problematic than it seems. The major hole behind these first-choice two is papered over and the slightest jarring of that paper will reveal how fragile the position is.

There is still time to identify more potential saviors to this developing issue, and there is always still a chance that Seri might be sold anyway, seeing as how he was almost at Roma before the transfer fell through.
