Arsenal don’t seem too interested in utilizing Calum Chambers, but there is no feasible way he can be an overflowing member of the ‘too big’ squad.

There were several players I was on the lookout for against Chelsea, to see how Arsenal utilized them, one which was Calum Chambers. And, as you can imagine, I was highly disappointed to see him in a suit.

Meanwhile, Rob Holding was on the other side of things, starting and playing the full 90 like he wasn’t even gone for the exact same amount of time as Chambers this preseason.

My concern rises from the talk of the town lately, that Arsene Wenger said that his squad was ‘too big,’ because, as can be assumed, that means some players will have to be trimmed. And while that ‘too big’ squad had a lot of youth players that are sure to be knocked back down into the youth set-up, others will be sold.

This has been arguably my biggest crusade of the summer – getting Chambers a chance to fit into that starting XI. Because guess what? Every chance he has had going back to the end of the 2015/16 season, has been convincing. And at Middlesbrough he was just as convincing.

This three-back set up, as I have said time and again, is ripe with options on how to utilize all of our center backs. But even thinking from the start, we have a suspended Laurent Koscielny and an injured Gabriel Paulista. Which means that there are only four center backs on the squad.

Unless you count Calum Chambers and… unless you count Sead Kolasinac.

I am over the moon at the Kolasinac signing. I couldn’t be more excited. But the man’s versatility should be a stop-gap solution. His true forte is going to come from playing wing back and that can’t happen so long as Wenger favors Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Hector Bellerin.

In turn, the Kolasinac deal works against Chambers because the Bosnian is being thrown into center back duties while Chambers is wearing suits.

It’s still too early to really gripe, but given how the preseason has gone, the future does not look promising for young Chambers, especially given the transfer rumors attached to him. The worst part about that whole thing is that it is at no fault of his. All he has done is proven himself and made a loan do what it is supposed to do.

The early season is his best chance to get into the action. If that doesn’t happen, then who knows what to expect going forward.
