Arsenal: Leon Goretzka looks like another Xhaka, Kolasinac success

Arsenal’s link with Leon Goretzka has gone dead, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. In fact, he looks like a continuation of the developing trend.

Arsenal has been tied off and on to Leon Goretezka this summer, but it’s become clear that he isn’t leaving just yet. He will either stay and finish out his contract, leaving on a free next summer, or re-up with FC Schalke.

Early talks indicated that he was almost certainly not remaining with his current outfit, and that is when the circle of vultures started swarming, with Bayern Munich leading the chase. However, Goretzka has gone on record to single out the links to Bayern and he is anything is but open to the idea.

"“Honestly, it is really getting on my nerves. I can see why it interests people but I can only repeat once again, there’s nothing new to report with Munich. I have clearly denied there is an agreement in place — with any club. I can promise you this is the case.”"

Those were his words to Sky Germany, which makes things really interesting going forward, because we have seen Arsenal master this situation both with Sead Kolasinac and Granit Xhaka.

With Xhaka, they had him locked down almost a year in advance, although it wasn’t a free. The seed was planted early and the mission statement was delivered and now Xhaka is being given and excelling at everything he had hoped he’d get with the Gunners.

Kolasinac came on a free from Schalke himself and was locked up very early on as well.

Meaning that with these two combined, Goretzka has an excellent chance to fit next in the queue, and, thanks to what the future is showing us, we have a pretty solid indication of what can be offered to him.

Goretzka plays the one position that isn’t overflowing with numbers and we can easily all agree that he would be an obvious upgrade on both Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin. He provides dimensions to the midfield that neither of them does. He has the effort and engine to cover box to box, he wins the ball back, he can score, assist, control – he can do it all.

If Bayern Munich really isn’t appealing to him and if he stands by the earlier belief that re-upping with Schalke isn’t for him, then Arsenal should absolutely be first on his list. Being the third piece in a two man position is not a bad place to be for a young man. He will have every opportunity in the world to make it big at a big time club.

And Kolasinac will be able to attest to that by the time he starts pre-negotiations in January.
