Arsenal: Calum Chambers ‘second chance’ can begin any time now

Arsenal’s defense has help on the way, but that doesn’t mean that Calum Chamber’s ‘second chance’ should be delayed any longer.

Arsenal was thoroughly embarrassed on the defensive end against Leicester City and a very similar hodge-podge was used against Stoke City, although to less detriment. But the fact remains that we really need to start figuring out just what the hell is going on with this defense, because the crapshoot tactics aren’t working.

I do not agree with the decision to sell Gabriel Paulista, as the man had very good ability. Especially when less useful names are still taking up first team spaces inexplicably. But there is one positive that came from that sale, and that positive is a sudden re-emergence of belief in Calum Chambers.

Don’t forget, Chambers was the future of the England defense until Arsene Wenger tried to make him into a right back when it was clear that his future was at center back. That kind of ability doesn’t just go away.

And by “that kind of ability,” I mean the ability to face down both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez in two separate one-on-one situations and stuff them both like a Thanksgiving turkey.

That kind of ability.

At a time when the biggest question surrounding the team is the defense, it probably serves the team’s best interests to consider the resources that they have and how they may fill in what is lacking.

For instance, size has been a problem, as well as organization and communication. Players are out of position.

Why Wenger did not opt to see Chambers more during the preseason is beyond me, but it’s time to move forward and get this whole ‘second chance’ thing started. Chambers is a strong defender, he stays in position well and he doesn’t get fooled very easily.

To me, that sounds like a pretty solid fit for what the defense currently lacks. And with Rob Holding down with the U23s and Gabriel sold away, Chambers has a wide open path to get his head back above water.

Thankfully, Laurent Koscielny will be returning against Liverpool, which should set the defense to rights again. As for Chambers, as much as that second chance would be justified, he is going to have to wait for side competitions and become a member of the rotational defense.

That’s where Holding started, after all, and he latched onto the first team pretty easily afterwards. If it can happen once, it can happen again.
