Arsenal absolutely need another central midfielder. Thankfully, after what they pulled off with Alexandre Lacazette, Jean Michael Seri seems realistic.

Arsenal’s transfer window started so well and has gone to hell in a handbasket ever since. They are selling questionable players and not making any noticeable progress in negotiating new contracts. As far as new additions, I wouldn’t call it a do or die situation, but there is one area in particular that oculd use strengthening.

And that is in central midfield. The first team pairing of Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey has its uses and is definitely worthy of the spot that they have. But if something were to go wrong with either of them, which is a very likely scenario, the club would have nowhere to turn.

Mohamed Elneny is a stopgap option that could prevent a catastrophe, but he doesn’t have the layers of usefulness that a first-teamer at Arsenal should have.

Jack Wilshere could absolutely fill the role, but as we have learned over the past decade, relying on him is like expecting your body not to sink when you walk on water.

Thankfully, Jean-Michael Seri remains a premium option. The Nice midfielder had an outstanding year, but seemed dedicated to remaining at Nice as they fought for a Champions League berth. Which they now failed to achieve.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

And while Barcelona looked set to swoop, they have removed themselves from the transfer spectrum, meaning that there is nothing in the way of Arsenal nabbing their man.

Or, there is, actually, as Seri noted that he wanted Champions League football.

But so did Alexandre Lacazette, and as you may have heard, he is now a Gunner. So whatever was used to sway Lacazette into making the move to the Emirates, that same principle can be applied to Seri, assumedly, since he has said a similar thing. And, as strong as Nice have been, the Gunners are always going to be a step up, Champions League or now.

Landing Seri would form a nice little tripod of reliability in the middle of the pitch, with three first-team caliber midfielders all with different skill sets. It would open up more combinations to play with as Wenger fusses with how to solidify the center of the pitch, which has looked rather shaky at times.

Options are crucial for any team, especially a team that wants to top the best football division in the world. That central midfield is the heartbeat of this team. You can’t have too many options when it comes to maintaining a reliable heartbeat.
