With Arsenal’s defense crumbling like a house made of cheese crisps, Shkodran Mustafi is being sold. Could there be anything more stupid than this?

Arsenal’s defense was thoroughly eviscerated yet again and you can’t really pinpoint who is most to blame for the suckage, but one thing you can say is that while the defense continues to suck, the ranks continue to deplete.

First it was Gabriel Paulista being sold. Calum Chambers has disappeared in the process. Sead Kolasinac is being misused, if used at all. Shkodran Mustafi, meanwhile, was left out of the starting XI against Liverpool, presumably because he is on the brink of being sent to Inter Milan.

Meanwhile, a loose link to Virgil van Dijk exists and, other than that, the defense still sucks. I remember making fun of Manchester City’s defense these past couple years because of how porous they were.

City bought players and patched it up. Now they’re not half bad.

Arsenal’s defense has gotten substantially worse and all they’ve done is sold potential fixer-upper candidates.

Let me put this plainly – every single thing about this Shkodran Mustafi situation is absolutely, positively stupid. No matter what comes of it, no matter what happens – it’s completely stupid. Let’s say he stays. Then why the f@ck was he left out against Liverpool while Rob Holding was given the green light after a terrible first week and an equally terrible second week with the U23s?

That doesn’t seem the most likely scenario though. The most likely scenario is that he was left out because he is being sold. Which is even more f&cking stupid than the previous situation.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

This defense is monumentally terrible. I don’t know what happened between the end of last season and the start of this season, but everything looks brand new to these guys. Like how successful I’d be writing a cohesive thought if you asked me to do it in Mandarin.

So why in the bloody hell are we even thinking about selling one of our better defenders? Think of it this way, of all our defenders, Mustafi has surrendered the least amount of goals. Just one against Stoke. Every single other defender that has played at least one minute has given up handfuls of goals.

Arsene Wenger: “Let’s sell him.”

What?

Let me for a moment assume that Mustafi wants to leave. Which I don’t believe for a moment. He’s only been here for a year. Even so, I’ll assume it. Why then are people like Alex “Meh”lade-Chamberlain traipsing about the pitch like they’re having a fun runaround with some local kids from the neighborhood when he has made it more than obvious that he wants to leave?

Wenger wants to force “Meh”lade-Chamberlain and “Meh”lexis Sanchez to play through their exit desires, so why not Mustafi too? Do you really think we are in a position to be selling defenders? And if so, can I have a hit of whatever you’re having? Because it must be some potent stuff.

I’m not pretending that Mustafi is the fix-all solution. He isn’t. But in a complete “dear Lord, we are sinking fast” situation, shouldn’t we be using the guys with the most experience, the most talent and therefore the best chance we have of mounting any sort of defensive stand?

I’m so tired of seeing our defense look like cheese on a grater. And Mustafi is, as of right now, the only defender who gives me any hope.
