Arsenal need to be rescued and while we all thought it would be by a new signing, it’s entirely possible that it can be done by Jack Wilshere.

Arsenal need a savior. Or six. And there are a ton of ways you can find someone of that nature. Right now, no one on the team seems capable of stepping up to the plate. Either because they don’t want to be here (which is inexcusable) or because it’s not in their nature (which is fine, not everyone is this type).

We need to look at the current set up though and recognize that there is a lot of talent on this club (I gagged a bit admitting that, after what we’ve seen). I definitely think that another move or four could make a huge difference to the club.

But I also think that we need to explore the options that we currently have. Reiss Nelson, for instance, could be a perfectly suitable first team option. It’s risky, but so is a transfer.

Mostly though, I’m talking about Jack Wilshere. Who, spoiler alert, is not going to Real Betis.

I am well aware that relying on Jack Wilshere to stay healthy is crazy talk. You just can’t do it. But 1. there is always a chance and 2. we don’t have to wholly rely on him. The problem with the current Arsenal midfield set up, as we knew the problem would be, is a gross lack of options.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

As it stands, Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka, individually, are the only first-team quality midfielders. As a partnership, it’s a bit of a disaster. But I can’t see how any of the other two options we have would be any better.

Watching Jack Wilshere play for the U23s against Manchester City was inspiring. Mostly because he showed a new understanding of how to sit deep and to only break when it was completely safe. Majority of the time, he was sitting back, like Xhaka, keeping everything in front of him.

A Wilshere with that capability not only has less risk of getting hurt, but also fits with what this midfield currently needs. I love Ramsey and what he brings to the team and wouldn’t mind seeing Wilshere, Ramsey and Xhaka all out there in some way, but we have to think of ways to move forward from that disaster at Liverpool.

And Wilshere is certainly a way to do that. Let him start as an impact sub and see how it works. See how he does. All I know is that every time Wilshere is healthy with the first team, he has proven that the talent is still there, he just needs the health. If we can get 2000 minutes out of him, he will score goals and he will make a difference.

A big difference.

Best of all? We know he wants to be there. We know he plays for the badge on his chest and not the name on the back. And if you don’t buy any of that, just ask yourself how it could be any worse than what we currently have going.
