Arsenal’s contract situation has already lead to one departure and another is likely to follow next summer, so Ian Wright certainly has a point about Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal were facing quite the crisis this summer, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil entering the final year of their contracts. They dealt the brat to Liverpool and appear willing to let Alexis walk for free next summer, which leaves Mesut Ozil.

The German maestro has indicated on more than one occasion that he wants to stay and that he loves it here and, on the four year anniversary of his signing with Arsenal, he decided to have a bit of a rant on Twitter in which he called out numerous former players for being critical of him.

If I’m being honest, I didn’t mind it. I love to see him a bit fired up, defending his club. But I hadn’t thought of it the same way Ian Wright had thought of it after he lashed out at Ozil, calling his tirade “laughable.”

Wright’s point is that if Ozil feels this strongly about the club, he should sign the deal and stop hiding behind the Alexis Sanchez contract situation, which is dominating the limelight while no one seems to be noticing that the German is still not locked in.

I theorized that in order for Ozil to get the contract he wanted, Arsenal first had to sell off some of their dead weight.

But that’s just a theory and I don’t particularly believe it, I was just trying to find some sort of justification for why it was taking so long if he wanted to stay that badly.

It sucks that there are so many rifts developing at the club, and that there are present players and fans and legends all at each other’s throats. But the cliche of “actions speak louder than words” rings true yet again.

While we have to appreciate the leadership Ozil has provided, particularly to the younger players, his whole “I want to stay” means nothing until he proves it by signing a deal. And that’s what Ian Wright is saying.

With the future of Alexis Sanchez a dreaded monster that we don’t want to have to face, seeing Ozil put word into action and sign the deal would be a massive confidence boost that this club isn’t going to lose everyone.
