Arsenal: Chopping block needs a head other than Alexandre Lacazette’s
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s attack suddenly has a wealth of options and someone has to make way. That someone certainly can’t be Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal’s win against Bournemouth showed an incredibly intelligent, potent attack and they did it all without Alexis Sanchez, as he was still recovering from his injury obtained on international duty. Which is saying something, because this attack was supposedly so dependent on the man.

Which makes things interesting going forward, because we have three positions in the attack – three very set positions – and four guys that should be filling those roles. Which is literally the greatest thing ever, because it is a luxury we have been craving for years.
The problem, though, if you can even call it a problem, is who makes way. Because you know that with Alexis Sanchez back, someone has to make way and get lopped off at the chopping block, because the Chilean is always going to play so long as he is healthy.
I have entertained the idea that Arsene Wenger may do the unthinkable and make Alexis earn his way back into the starting XI but I highly doubt that will come to pass. Instead, we have to find another head for the chopping block, and I don’t think it’s going to be a pretty sight.
Either Danny Welbeck or Alexandre Lacazette is likely to give way, and that’s the scary part of it. Wenger has always showed a tendency to favor the long-term players over the new ones.

However, the one bit of hope we can glean from all of this is that he has already sacrificed Lacazette to the chopping block once and it lead to the most debilitating loss in recent memory. To think that he would feed the guillotine with the same guy twice, after it proved to be such a disaster, is rather silly.
But then again, Danny Welbeck is currently second in the race of the golden boot. To sit someone in that kind of position would be just as crazy as sacrificing the club record signing who scores on the majority of the chances that he has.
So you see, it’s a pickle and a half. Mesut Ozil would never be sat. Wenger has proven that. There is no easy way to make such a difficult decision.
I still support the idea of making Alexis earn his way back into the starting XI, but as I mentioned, I cannot see how Wenger would ever approve something like that. Not if he still has any hope of Alexis hanging around.

The only solution is to bench Welbeck. Which sounds absolutely crazy given the position that he is in, but what else can be done? Because we sure as hell can’t bench Lacazette again.
