Arsenal brushed aside Bournemouth thanks in part to Danny Welbeck, but Garth Crooks isn’t impressed. He’s so unimpressed, that he’s said the dumbest thing ever.

We’re starting the new week off with all of the criticism in the world regarding Arsenal. You’d think they drew 0-0 against the Cherries at the Emirates with all the talks of how they are on the brink of chaos and various other ridiculous and stupid – yes stupid – claims being made.

Take former Tottenham man Garth Crooks, for instance. Now, I tried to figure out a way to butter up what he said so this article didn’t have to sound so harsh. But there is no way around it. What Crooks said is stupid. That’s it. Here are his words (via the BBC), brace yourself:

“The number of times I have seen Welbeck score goals that aren’t clean connections makes me wonder, is he what you would call ‘a genuine finisher’ in the same way you would categorise other Arsenal forwards like Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp or Thierry Henry? Not in my opinion,”

But wait, there’s more!

“Arsenal might have brushed aside Bournemouth but until the Gunners have genuine finishers in the team they can forget about Premier League titles.”

I get a shiver every time I read it. I am literally embarrassed for Crooks. To say something this stupid on live television – you can’t hide from that.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Where do I even start? First of well, Danny Welbeck was fantastic. To criticize the style of his header is pathetic. I want to see Crooks try to bend and acclimate his body to get that ball on goal, let alone in the net.

And of course Welbeck isn’t as good of a finisher as the three best strikers in Arsenal history. No one has ever made that claim.

Not just that, but if you are going to criticize the first goal, then how about the perfect touch of the second goal? Didn’t hear Crooks say anything about that beauty.

Again, I need to stop myself from saying more inflammatory things about Crooks, but did he think before he spoke?

Until we have genuine finishers? What do you call Alexandre Lacazette? Alexis Sanchez? These are two of the most genuine finishers in the game.

Crooks’ statement reads like the statement of someone who didn’t watch the match and hasn’t kept up with Arsenal’s dealings over the past six months. He’s talking about Welbeck as if he is our first (and only) choice striker. Which has absolutely never been the case.

Welbeck’s performance against Bournemouth is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only was it a joy to watch, but it has exposed the likes of Garth Crooks to say absolutely asinine things that make no sense.
