Arsenal has been enjoying a thrilling run of form with Danny Welbeck, but with Chelsea on the docket, do they keep rolling the dice on him?

Arsenal has scored seven goals this season. Danny Welbeck has three goals and one assist. He accounts for over 50% of the goals this club has and he is tied for second in the race for the golden boot. There is a lot going right for Welbeck, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are miles away from something going wrong.

The problem with Danny Welbeck has never been the glimpses of utter brilliance. The problem has always been consistency. He is never able to stretch out those glimpses and make them standard procedure.

If you look at his history, you would expect him to now go on a ten match goalless streak. I hate to say it, but that’s what his track record suggests. And it’s for that reason that many are suggesting that Alexis Sanchez come right back and take the Englishman’s place.

But I’m here to say that Welbeck deserves one more roll of the dice. And here’s why: Alexis was massive against FC Koln, yet, and he is a game changer. But he can always be used to come on if Welbeck does struggle to get anything going.

Not just that, but more importantly, you have to make Alexis earn that role back. And by that I mean you can’t just toss Welbeck aside because Alexis is back. You have to make sure that Welbeck is given a chance to uphold his role and that is what he would be doing against Chelsea. He would be handed a chance and told to defend his starting role with everything he has.

This way, it’s justified. Everything would be. Alexis has earned the role and Welbeck knows he has actually, physically lost it. Not that it was taken from him.

And then when the next chance rolls around for him to make a statement, you don’t have a bitter Welbeck who was unjustly robbed of a starting role, you have a hungry Welbeck who lost it fair and square.

We all know that Alexis is far more reliable, but that isn’t really what this is all about. For starters, we have to think about longevity, and learning to cope without Alexis. So long as Welbeck is doing this (which, again, may well end tomorrow), he has to be left in there because it will make the transition so much easier.

The only reason Welbeck can be pushed aside is if he has a sub-par performance. When everything is performance-based, there can’t be any complaining. Right now, no one is proving to be as valuable as Welbeck. So, don’t mess with it.

That said, if he’s flubbing all over the place, a quick hook for Alexis is completely advisable.
