Arsenal’s reported ‘done deal’ with Marc Overmars to come back as Sporting Director has hit a road block, but we’ve learned so much in the process.

Arsenal have been under the total control of Arsene Wenger since the departure of the benevolent David Dein, who had such a fantastic relationship with Wenger that the two seemed to be in perfect sync. Dein would get the players to Wenger, who would win things with them.

There hasn’t been any attempt to replicate that. Not even a batted eye. Ivan Gazidis was brought in as CEO, we all had a good laugh at that, and now we want a real person controlling transfers other than Wenger, who clearly has trouble multitasking.

This past summer started so promisingly, but it went bad really quick. There was contractual and transfer silence after that initial burst.

It all looked to be coming to an end with recent reports that Marc Overmars would be returning to Arsenal as their long-lost Sporting Director in the summer of 2018.

Everyone lost their minds, and rightly so. They were calling for him to sign up yesterday, why wait until the summer? Get someone in here who can work in tandem with Wenger and not force Le Prof to do everything himself, a job no man should have to do alone.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

However, just when all the reports were calling it a done deal, both sides spoke up and said it wasn’t happening. First it was Arsene Wenger shunning the reports, now, it’s Overmars saying that he is happy at Ajax, and that nothing was going on with other clubs.

Overmars is under contract at the Dutch side until 2020. It would take one hell of a deal from the Gunners to successfully land Overmars, although it’s safe to say it would be worth it.

They may call the deal off, but look at the reaction. There was not a soul opposed to the idea of Overmars coming back to the club. Quite the contrary – everyone loved it. It was the greatest thing imaginable. For all the problems that the Gunners have on the pitch, no problem is bigger than the circus that is the Arsene Wenger transfer show.

I doubt that anyone in a position of power gives half a shat about what the supporters did when a rumor of Overmars popped up, but it highlights just how desperate of a state this club is in.
