Arsenal: “You can’t question our character” completely laughable

Arsenal’s character were called into question by Troy Deeney and Arsene Wenger had to respond. But his response is actually worse than Deeney’s statement.

Arsenal’s loss to Watford triggered a lot of comments by some of the Hornets players. Troy Deeney took the opportunity to yet again voice his opinions, questioning the lack of “cojones” that his opponents had, and how little they wanted it.

His comments, along with Tom Cleverly’s comments about smelling blood in the water, were telling. And they weren’t debatable either. They each had a point.

But Wenger has fired his rebuttal, just in typical Wenger fashion (not that it’s a bad thing), he was classy in his response. He didn’t pull any punches and allowed that everyone is entitled to their opinion. In Wenger’s opinion, “You can’t question our character.”

And, since we are all entitled to our opinions, I’ll go ahead and voice mine – that’s horseshit.

Notice, I didn’t even use the “!” for the “i” like I normally do. That’s horseshit it is. We can’t question the team’s character? Well then what the hell can we question? We can’t question the talent, because the talent is there.

There is so much talent on this team. And so much depth. Think in the summer time about how everyone was just gushing about how deep this team was in nearly every position. That attack? Loaded. The defense? Stout.

And they even added a little backbone in Sead Kolasinac. There was so much to look forward to with this season and, to be fair, there was good stretch. That goo stretch has now become sandwiched between two shit stretches. Or, rather, one shit stretch and one stretch that has only begun and which they are ideally going to fix before it becomes the other half of this sandwich.

Back to the point, what are we supposed to blame? What are we supposed to question? The management? Wenger would never incriminate himself. The contract situation? Well that falls under management.

This is a whole bunch of words – yet again – without any proof. Character, the kind we aren’t supposed to question, does not allow these kinds of things to happen time and time again.

Character, the kind we aren’t supposed to question, does not take 1-0 leads into the hour mark and then collapse and lay around and watch as they go on to lose.

That is not character. Or not strong character, I should say. It’s weakness. To borrow a phrase I heard recently, it’s character that lacks in “cojones.” And oddly enough, Jack Wilshere has said the exact same thing, although to be fair, I would never, ever question his personal character. Something I can’t say about a lot of the others guys on this team.

In the word battle between Wenger and Deeney, I think you’ll find a significant majority in favor of the Watford man. What a joke.
