Mesut Ozil is symbolic of Arsenal as whole. He is a genius at his best, maybe even the best creator in Europe. But needs a hiding when things go south.

In he came when Arsenal asked for his creativity, for his genius. He came, he saw, he scored, he assisted, he conquered. That was what could have been with Mesut Ozil. But it hasn’t worked out that way (except for his 19 assist season haul).

It was writing on the wall for the Gunners once again against the Hornets. Although they were unfortunate  as well with the penalty. Watford did it last year and the bogey team took away three points this year as well. And apparently, the Mesut Ozil introduction was the smell of blood for the Hornets.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Ozil is symbolic of this club as whole. He is a genius at his best, maybe even the best creator in Europe. But needs a hiding badly when things go south. The Gunners have been more or less been treading down the same path for last decade.

Questions have been raised about his commitment to the club. He has clocked a total of 396 minutes of league action this season. He has scored none, neither has been the provider. His efforts in training have also reportedly dipped.

While Alexis Sanchez has his admirers around the transfer world, Ozil shouldn’t be sure of interest in him materializing into a bid. Manchester United and Inter Milan are supposedly interested. Both have the never ending cash reserves to lure him.

But they wouldn’t want to bid on a 29 year old with such a nonchalant attitude and poor work rate. He needs to perform and perform well. Without that, neither will the bids come nor a new contract if he has a change of heart.

Arsenal need a new figure to guide them into the new era. Ozil was meant to be one back in 2013. But both parties have stalled since then. And who can take us into the new era. A rejuvenated Jack Wilshere maybe. An ‘available’ Thomas Lemar. Even a settled Alexandre Lacazette. Even the German maestro could, possibly take the mantle once again.
