Arsenal vs Swansea City: Aaron Ramsey still Ozil-ing as well

Arsenal didn’t have many, if any, poor performers against Everton, but there are still plenty of guys with more to prove, and Aaron Ramsey is one.

Arsenal’s win over Everton was an easy path to peak form for literally every single attacker and midfielder that the Gunners deployed, starter and sub. And while critics still want to see more out of a lot of these attackers to prove it wasn’t a fluke, Mesut Ozil has been taking in the most demands.

I have to say I’m of the same boat where I still want to see Ozil do more. Or, rather, do more consistently. He has been a bit off since his breakthrough in 2015 and finding his way back to that pristine form is an ongoing process.

That said, Aaron Ramsey is still Ozil-ing too. His peak 2013/14 form has not been consistently met since that Super Rambo year and while glimpses of it have returned, the numbers have yet to follow.

I gushed over Ramsey last year when he was slipped back into this formation because it seemed to unlock his super powers again, but in the spirit of being fair, I have to see Ramsey put up numbers, just like I expect Ozil too.

With two goals and two assists on the year, both among the best in the squad, he is well on his way, but consistency is key, as it always is, and he has yet to give us one full year of his best self since that big year.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The reason why I never soured on Ramsey like I so easily sour on Ozil is because with Ramsey, you can never doubt his work ethic, nor his desire. You can see him trying new things and for him frustration leads to him trying harder. Occasionally that will mean trying too hard and making it worse, but it’d rather see that than essentially giving up and trying new things.

Think of it this way – when Ozil is banging his head against he wall, unable to get anything going, he keeps banging with the same temperament. When Ramsey is banging his head against the wall, unable to get anything going, he starts banging harder and harder, desperate to knock it down.

In the end, the wall stays and they both get concussions, but at least one is showing more than the other.

I’m also more optimistic about Ramsey making this form permanent, because we have a bit more evidence that he can get into top form more frequently than Ozil.

Either way they both have throngs of critics, and while I consider myself a critic of Ozil and an apologist of Ramsey, I will still say that they both have more to prove.
