Arsenal has been reliant on Arsene Wenger for many, many years, but the pending appointment of Sven Mislintat is just another step away from that.

Arsenal are reportedly set to announce the monumental signing of Borussia Dortmund scout Sven Mislintat. Dubbed “Diamond Eye,” this is the scout responsible for acquiring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyan, Christian Pulisic and Ousmane Dembele, among many others.

These are the kinds of signings that Arsene Wenger dreams about. Young, under-the-radar guys that turn into superstars and either stick at Arsenal or can be sold off for massive profits because they’ve gotten to be so damn good.

But this isn’t a signing that is meant to coincide with Arsene Wenger. This is a move that pushes farther away from Wenger for one simple reason – he won’t be around to appreciate what this man does.

Many supporters want Wenger gone, they want a massive overhaul and all that and for the most part, it’s hard to argue. The club is stagnating and when that happens, often times the best solution is to just jangle the whole system.

But when one man – Wenger – has been an overlord of sorts for a decade and a manager for two decades, that isn’t something you just move on from. You need to be prepared and you have to stock the club for the future lest you send such a rift through the club, like what Sir Alex Ferguson did when he retired.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Manchester United still haven’t recovered.

Arsenal don’t want to see that happen. And they’ve been planning this for awhile, with Wenger actively participating. In 2015 and 2016, Wenger spent tons of time signing young, talented teenagers to bolster a youth system that was starting to look pretty thin.

They have been actively searching for a Sporting Director too, although Wenger is less than keen to own up to those rumors.

Mislintat’s scouting abilities have helped Borussia Dortmund through serious troubles, both with management and consistency on the pitch. Pure talent has kept them in the top tier of the European footballing spectrum.

In a sense, that in and of itself is a hint of what the Gunners want from him. When Wenger leaves, there are no guarantees and we will need all the talent we can possibly find, with high frequency, in order to help lift the team through any potential rifts developing from Le Prof’s departure.
