Arsenal is all about sharp, clean business. Well, if they land Leon Goretzka, they can put on cruise control for the rest of the summer.

Arsenal will have a lot of questions to answer going into the summer transfer window, perhaps even as early as January if the two superstars slip away. But they can preemptively answer all – yes all – of their pressing questions for free. Via Leon Goretzka.

I know what you’re thinking – have I gone batty? Absolutely. Not. And here’s why – think for a second about what Arsenal really, truly needs. Remember I said “pressing needs” so a secondary left wingback doesn’t strike me as pressing because there are alternatives.

What does strike me as pressing is the potential void that forms just behind the striker if both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil leaves. So, for the sake of me presenting my crazy argument, let’s say they both leave.

Also, for the sake of my argument, let’s say that Arsenal are sticking with the current formation as it was laid out against Tottenham. Because why wouldn’t we?

That means that in my argument, we need to fill those attacking midfield roles and I’m going to do it with just Goretzka. Because we already have some built-in solutions.

Jack Wilshere,

assuming he stays healthy, will have pressed back into the picture, as he is already doing, and he will have signed a new deal and committed himself to the long-term future.

Alex Iwobi will still be here, and if he hasn’t made progress by the end of the season, then I just don’t know what to do with him.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Combine those two, plus an emerging Reiss Nelson, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I’m pretty happy with those three duking it out for one of the attacking roles.

In the other role, you can utilize Aaron Ramsey or Goretzka, whichever you don’t want in the deeper role. The deeper role that both have proven efficient at. So in a sense, you’re even gaining defensive capabilities because Goretzka and Ramsey are very similar players and they will both track back no matter what position they are placed in.

As will Wilshere, if he wins out. So the question you all want to hear me answer is: if we only sign Goretzka, would I be happy?

Yes. I would be happy. Because it shows faith in the talent we have and it shows intelligence.

That said, I do hope we sign more. I want to see Nabil Fekir and Julian Draxler and all of these superstars coming in and replacing Elneny and Coquelin, because that’s how Arsenal gets to the next level and if ever there is a summer where that is going to happen, it will be next summer.

But in terms of “our starting XI has this big gap and we have nothing to put there,” you can legitimately say that landing Goretzka ends that concern. Then you can go start looking for upgrades elsewhere. And how nice that would be, to be able to check off the “needs” category before the summer even starts and get into the, more or less, luxury signings.
