Arsenal are supposedly yet again looking at Karim Benzema to replace Alexis Sanchez and yet again, this remains the stupidest rumor in existence.

I usually just let stupid Arsenal transfer rumors pass by, die, and fade into obscurity where they belong. I accept that they will spring back up like an ugly troll and I’ll look at them and treat them more of the same.

But every time Karim Benzema is linked to Arsenal, especially in a specific capacity, I just feel a completely different sensation. Yes, it’s stupid, like most of the other rumors, but it’s not just stupid, it is in fact so brainless that there is not an ounce of sense contained within the rumor. Not a single ounce.

I am not a Benzema fan. If you haven’t figured that out in those initial two paragraphs, you could find that out by searching “Karim Benzema” on Pain in the Arsenal and seeing all the times I have belittled his potential arrival at the Emirates after that initial rumor of him coming over from his trip to China.

I do this for one simple reason – because I care about the club and I hate the idea that someone out there thinks that Karim Benzema would be a good idea.

The latest rumor is saying that Benzema is a replacement for Alexis Sanchez. How daft can you be? These two have nothing in common. Benzema is a finisher. That’s it. That’s who he is, he doesn’t do much more. He is a specialist, like Mesut Ozil.

Alexis is a worker, and engine, a creator and a finisher. If you think you can replace Alexis with Benzema, you might as well replace a chair with a single chair leg. Let me know how that goes, because I’ll bet it’s none too comfortable.

Benzema has reached the pinnacle of his footballing existence. He has said that. He believes Real Madrid are at the pinnacle. Anything else, therefore, would be a step down and for a specialist like him, would most likely not be that high of a priority. What does he have to prove if he’s already proven all he came to prove? Answer: nothing.

Not just that, but Benzema is a striker. Alexis is only used as a striker in desperation. We already have Olivier Giroud, who is a better international striker than Benzema, sitting on the bench wishing he could nick some playing time, so now we want to say that adding another striker is the best option?

Wenger doesn’t play with two strikers. He has proven that.

This is a stupid rumor. Every bit of it. The sooner you divorce yourself from the very concept of it, the better.
