Upon losing 3-1 to Manchester United at home that ended a 12  game winning streak at the Emirates stadium, Arsenal have now suffered 5 defeat with 23 games left to play.

Arsenal were outscored 3-1 at home by Manchester United in their last Premier League fixture Which resulted in yet another loss for the season.

With 15 games played, Arsenal are currently sitting in fifth position with 28 points; a good 15 point behind league leaders Manchester City, who have yet to taste defeat in the league this season. One worrying statistic for the Gunners is the amount of losses racked up before half the Premier League games have even been played.

Arsenal are on five defeats this season, with the first coming against Stoke City. The North London side then got battered against Liverpool in a shocking 4-0 loss away from home. Losses to Watford and both the Manchester clubs would also occur, leaving the Gunners with 55% of their total losses for all of last season, already reached.

All of last season only 9 games were lost, resulting in a Europa League standing, on a total of 75 points. Prior to last season, Arsenal finished every season with a total of 7 losses since the season with the infamous 8-2 loss to Man United, in which defeat was tasted a total of 10 times.

The most losses under current manager Arsene Wenger was 11, which came during the final Highbury season of 2005/06. Though the poor league form was amended during the Champions League campaign after reaching the final, only to lose 2-1 to Barcelona in a heartbreaking defeat which denied Arsenal their first Champions League trophy.

During that bittersweet season, five losses were also suffered during the first 15 games and a total of 67 points was accumulated; the worst of Wenger’s time in charge. But, that wasn’t the last time to have lost five in their opening fifteen.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The last time for it to happen was during the  2008/09 season. Defeats to Fulham, Hull City, Aston Villa, Stoke City and Manchester City left the North London side with a total of 26 points after 15 games. The team would then shape up, losing only once for the rest of the season, finishing comfortably in fourth position with 72 points.

Fans can only hope the same can be done this season to stop the risk of succumbing to one of our worst seasons statistically. A weak season statistically would mean a weak table finish, which would really see the club fall further from the top four.

It seems the goal of the season has become finishing within the top four as 15 points seems too far adrift for the team to catch, especially with the quality Man City have displayed so far. It seems very unlikely that the rampant league leaders would drop as many points for Arsenal to be within the title race.

On positive notes, only one game has been a tie so far this season, meaning almost maximum points from other fixtures have been received.

Also, Wenger is renowned for getting Arsenal out of the deep end when backs have been up against the wall. The manager would agree that five losses early in the season is unacceptable and will overturn the deficit, to make sure the squad reduce the number of points dropped and finish within a Champions League position.

Otherwise, like the previous seasons Arsenal lost five in 15, Wenger would be looking to make amends in another competition, whether it be another Fa cup victory, or focusing on the Europa league campaign; not all is doom and gloom. In fact Arsenal remain in the competition available to them, with a chance of winning all cup competitions.
