Arsenal aren’t making any progress with Jack Wilshere’s contract situation, but at the moment, that isn’t exactly a bad thing. It may actually be good.

Arsenal have long banked on the hopes of Jack Wilshere being the engine that drives their team. Even in the midst of every injury despair, there was always that lingering hope that this injury would be the last and he would return to rule the world.

That same belief is here again. People want him to start over everyone. I’m not so different, I want him to start just about every single match.

Against West Ham, he was great. Ignore what Rio Ferdinand said. In fact, just in general, probably just continue ignoring what he says. But in regards to Wilshere, we saw him putting clear improvements on the pitch, both defensively and offensively.

The finish was awful, yes. But overall he was quality.

Which is why it might be a tad bit worrying that no contract extension has been signed. Along with our two superstars, Wilshere also has his contract running out in 2018. Unlike our two superstars, there is a general sense of belief that Wilshere is clear to stay. So why then has no progress been made?

Well, Wilshere had this to say about it, as quoted by the Guardian:

"No, there’s no update on the contract – we’re in the same position as we were two weeks ago. Nothing’s changed. There’s not really a date in the diary [for talks]. I’ve only read what the boss has said in the media. I’ve just played my first game in the Premier League. I’m concentrating on staying fit and staying in this team. That will look after itself. When it’s the right time to talk about it, I’m sure the boss will call me and we’ll have a chat.More from Pain in the Arsenal3 standout players from 1-0 victory over Everton3 positives & negatives from Goodison Park victoryArsenal vs PSV preview: Prediction, team news & lineups3 talking points from Arsenal’s victory at Goodison ParkMikel Arteta provides Gabriel Martinelli injury update after Everton win"

He was then asked if he was concerned about the “stand-off” and had this to say:

"Erm, not really. Because I’ve just got my first Premier League start. I’m buzzing, I’m happy about that. That’s the next step for me – to get into this Premier League team and try to stay in this team"

This is a completely different situation than Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez because of one big reason: I think the No. 1 thing that needs to be determined is if Wilshere even has a place in this team. If he doesn’t, then what’s the point of extending him?

There’s a reason why contracts don’t seem to be going anywhere unless you’re 20 years of age or under. It’s because the Gunners are eyeing up a massive restructuring that is going to be hinging on how they finish this year and how Wilshere carries on this year.

I have to believe Wilshere falls into the category of having to prove himself to be included, not just in the health department but on the pitch too. The contract will come if he keeps playing like this. Bank on that.
