Arsenal: Everyone has a price, and so does Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang

Arsene Wenger is tight-fisted in the transfer window, but if he is serious about taking Arsenal to glory, the right price can do it. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has a price.

Arsenal’s history in the transfer window is the subject of intense scrutiny. Arsene Wenger has time and again noted that money is not an issue for the right player, but in my humble opinion, his dealing with the Alexandre Lacazette squashes that. For three years we were tied to him, but the price was never right. Then we finally bought him.

But I digress. The point is that nearly every single player has a price. And when there is a player that we for sure know has a price, as he has indicated a desire to leave, then that player is, by default, available.

That said, it is important to never expect the unexpected from Arsene Wenger, unless the unexpected carries negative connotations. Now, with that said, the “same old” Arsenal may well be coming to and end.

Believe what you want, but clearly Arsene Wenger’s vice grip is loosening a bit, with the additions of so many important key figures. Sven Mislintat is here to find young talent, but Raul Sanllehi may be taking a much more senior team approach, when he does arrive.

Moving on, the January window is now open and if Wenger is serious about offloading Alexis, he will have to provide as equal as a reaction as possible. I had largely ruled out ever seeing Aubameyang at Arsenal, mostly because of the accompanying price. But “top quality players,” as Wenger is supposedly prepared to bring in, cost top quality money. Which Arsenal certainly have.

What I’m getting at is, if we can sell Alexis for a chunky sum in January, then that chunky sum can go directly towards an extra chunky price tag, the likes of which Aubemeyang has. Last figures I saw were just shy of £100m, which is, again, unlikely.

But impossible? Call me crazy, but with Arsenal, nothing is impossible. That goes in both directions, good and bad.

Aubameyang would be an appropriate response, if not an upgrade, but we all know that. The question is how likely this would be. To which I say, again, that everyone has a price. We would just have to pay it. Borussia Dortmund are not in fine fettle and Aubemeyang has faced team-induced suspensions this very year.

He wants to leave. He has doted over Real Madrid, but has also noted the attractiveness of the Premier League.

I won’t argue with anyone that wants to rule this out as impossible based on track record. Maybe it’s my ridiculous optimism, but if this club is really intent on changing in the coming windows, then purchasing someone like Aubameyang is one hell of a way to do it. Plus, Sky Sports is reporting the interest. That has to count for something, right?
