Arsenal’s defense was a piss-poor mess against Nottingham Forest, so at this point, there is no price too high for Jonny Evans. Or anyone.

There are no words that better describe the current state of the Arsenal defense other than ‘suckage.’ Complete and total suckage. No matter who is back there, no matter the formation, the Gunners are porous. It’s legitimately embarrassing.

And the worst part is that it makes no real sense. The people that are back there doing the defending have individual talent galore. So why is it that Nottingham Forest complete eviscerate us? The point of a rotational squad is to have players that can challenge for the first team. There was not a single player on the pitch that can make that claim. Other than the two young wingbacks.

The defense though, in particular, was abysmal. All three centerbacks, with Mohamed Elneny dropping in from time to time to the same effect, were massacred by the 14th placed team in the Championship.

At this point, how quickly can we get Jonny Evans? Can he be here tomorrow? The oozing inadequacy is dry-heave worthy. The gross lack of athleticism and poor decision-making, not just against Nottingham Forest but in the Premier League too, begs for immediate changes.

We are playing old, injured and out of position defenders. Only two players, Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi, are currently pulling enough weight to merit further and immediate use, but even they have struggled massively.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Evans is an experienced, reliable Premier League defender. Which is more than what we can claim for so many of our current players. He is a centerback too, which shouldn’t have to be pointed out, but it’s somehow relevant.

And the best part is that if he can anchor West Brom, who are probably one of the worst teams to consistently play good defense, then he is probably, and by probably, I mean definitely, an upgrade over the circus we are currently running.

This team is critically lacking an identity. You can see glimpses of identities popping up every so often. I think Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding can be a fantastic foundation for a new identity. But they aren’t there yet.  So we are in this awful period of having too many old guys and too many young guys. Since we sold Gabriel, Mustafi is the only guy in between.

Evans can be another. Just please, please don’t make us sit through another defensive fiasco without addressing the problem.
