Arsenal Vs Chelsea: 5 things we learned – Excellent result; troubling developments
2. Is this it for Alexis Sanchez?
With Mesut Ozil absent with a knee injury and Wenger ostensibly insistent on starting his strongest possible line-up, as he was right to be, it seemed obvious that Alexis Sanchez would start as a member of Arsenal’s front three. The spark that he and Ozil provide has been central to the attacking potency that the Gunners have enjoyed in many games this season. Losing both when one is available seems a little backwards. And yet, that is exactly what happened.
Now, it is pure speculation as to why Sanchez didn’t start. Only Wenger, Sanchez, and perhaps a few of the players and coaches only truly know. It’s highly likely that Wenger wanted to start him given that he fielded all his other Premier League stars. And he was fit enough to make the bench and then come on with nearly half an hour to play. So it is a little peculiar that he did not start.
The immediate and most obvious reason is the growing rumour that Sanchez will leave this January. Manchester City are pushing hard for his signature; Arsenal have touted Malcom as a possible replacement. All the pieces fit the jigsaw and this is another corner piece being laid on the table. It remains to be seen if Sanchez will stay at the Emirates for the remainder of his contract. But conventional wisdom suggests not. This could well be the beginning of the end.
