2. Jack Wilshere the only shining light

There weren’t many positives for Arsenal to draw on. The result itself was extremely detrimental to their top-four hopes, especially with Spurs’ win on Saturday. The performance was destitute, lacking quality and character. The feeling around the club is a desperate one, with any glimmer of hope only narrowing. But if there was one individual player or storyline that does lift the heart a little, then it was the display that Jack Wilshere provided.

Playing at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield, while panic and sloppiness reigned around him, Wilshere exuded a calmness, composure and confidence on the ball that set him apart from every other player on the pitch. He frequently received possession deep in his own half, under pressure, only to control the ball, spin away from the defender, and then suddenly burst into space and start another Arsenal attack.

There is still a question over Wilshere’s future. His contract expires at the end of the season and, although both he and Wenger have stated that they expect a new deal to be completed, no extension has been agreed upon. Given his recent performances, it is something that should be an increasing priority for the club.
