In the midst of Arsenal’s despair, they are yet again linked to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But the prolific striker would force Arsene Wenger to face too many demons.

Arsenal’s loss to Bournemouth forces everyone to redefine what “rock bottom” really means, because it’s hard to imagine it getting any worse, but we have said that before. And I can’t imagine this will be the last time, with how long it takes to get anything done at this club.

That said, with Alexis Sanchez excluded from the loss and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also excluded for Dortmund over the weekend, it was only a matter of time. The two had to be correlated.

And, before the sickening feeling of the loss even had a chance to settle in, the link was there. Clearly Aubameyang was the “top quality” player that Wenger guaranteed we would have in return for Alexis.

I’m not saying it couldn’t happen. Somewhere deep down inside my brain I still have this belief in Wenger to do the right thing. Naturally, the right thing would be to spent big.

The problem arises in multiple parts though, call it the three-headed demon. And no, one isn’t Stan Kroenke. He is the all-present demon that doesn’t take any other form besides his own, toupee-wearing self.

In order for Arsenal to land the services of the Gabonese forward, Wenger would have to come to terms with these demons. The first being that this report indicates that Aubameyang would be the highest-paid player in Premier League history.

That doesn’t sound very much like Arsene Wenger does it? He may have said that the price doesn’t matter if it’s the right player, but he has said a lot of stuff.

But let’s say he can overcome the wages that would come with the Dortmund striker, he would also have to come to terms with spending a literal crap-ton of money on a striker after already having broken the club record on a striker just six months ago.

That doesn’t sound very much like Wenger, does it?

Then there is the last matter that stems from the last one – the fact that Wenger would either have to play one of the two – Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette – as a winger, or he would have to play with two strikers.

We know the former isn’t happening. So the latter would have to happen. The latter, which Wenger wouldn’t even do for Lacazette and Olivier Giroud.

Again, I’m not saying this can’t happen. I’d love to see it happen. I just don’t see how it could. I may be optimistic, but even my optimism has its limits. That said, a club of Arsenal’s stature shouldn’t have barriers in the transfer window. And Aubameyang would break down those barriers.
