Arsenal’s transfer policy is one of the most heavily-criticized aspects of the club, but there is one aspect in particular that just never seems to be answered for.

There are a lot of painful facts that we all have to accept about Arsenal Football Club in its current set up. Many people take all of their frustrations out on Arsene Wenger and I won’t sit here and spout about whether I think that is right or wrong. The man clearly has his flaws. Plenty of them.

I, for one, have always harbored ideas that there is so much more going on behind the scenes that we just don’t know about. And I am mostly talking about Stan Kroenke and his financial requirements. After all, this is just another business for him.

Wenger is certainly in charge of a lot of things, but, until we find out more, I can’t help but believe that he isn’t in complete control over how much gets spent. And there is one big reason why.

Wenger loves this club. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional. You don’t spend over two decades at a job if you don’t love it. That’s a fact.

The part that I don’t get, and that Wenger (or anyone else) never answers, is why the Gunners are the only “competitive” top tier team in the world that have to sell guys in order to buy. They are the only team that is concerned about making sure that they have “extra” money before they spend any money.

Take the summer. They had to sell Alexis before they could buy Thomas Lemar.

I get that some of it comes down to roster space. That part makes total sense. But no club in Arsenal’s position should be turning a profit. And guess what? The other clubs, our direct rivals (no not Burnley, our actual rivals) they spent like crazy and they don’t fall into debt.

The difference isn’t manager, the difference is the owner. Now I don’t want Arsenal to be a money-fueled ego machine like Manchester United, but trusting a manager like Wenger, who loves the club, with as much money as these other clubs trust their carousel of managers with, is going to have a much different effect.

Again, this is why I don’t think Wenger is fully to blame for the predicament the club is in. I think he can be a bit picky with clinging to old players for emotional value. I think he tries to be too clever. But I don’t think he would willingly deprive the team if the resources are available. Which means that maybe the resources just aren’t readily available.

I just wish we could know. Hopefully, post-Wenger era, we can know.
