Arsene Wenger has apparently made some promises to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang regarding his Arsenal move, but is he part of someone else’s promises too?

Arsene Wenger has his flaws, but one thing he certainly excels at is making grandiose claims of what is to come at Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil were undoubtedly expecting a cavalry of reinforcements. Granit Xhaka was promised “paradise” and no doubt Alexandre Lacazette was promised some hefty things to forsake a year of Champions League football.

Now, there are reports that Arsene Wenger has promised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang “world class reinforcements” in the summer, which was surely a big selling point.

You are more than welcome not to believe that such promises were made, but when you think about what it would take to lure Aubameyang to a sinking ship like Arsenal currently looks like, there had to be some assurances.

So to hear that more promises were made got me thinking – isn’t Aubameyang the answer to previous promises made to the likes of Ozil and Lacazette? That being the case, who would fulfill the promise made to Aubameyang if Ozil and Lacazette aren’t also “world class” reinforcements to fulfill this newest promise?

It’s like a chain of promises that, if continued on this path, can never fully be answered for, for a multitude of reasons, not least of all the sheer fact that Wenger seems to have a strict three world class players on the team at a time rule.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It’s great that Wenger is able to wrangle these types of players (assuming Aubameyang is coming, he hasn’t been made official as of writing) but when does it become obvious that the promises are empty? Or, less pessimistic question, when do the promises stop being left open-ended and start being fulfilled?

This far, Xhaka has not found his paradise. Lacazette is looking like a far-cry from entering the Champions League next year and Ozil doesn’t have the types of attackers he was hoping for. Does that mean that Aubameyang won’t have his reinforcements as promised or does that mean that Wenger and crew are finally planning to buckle down and deliver on some unfulfilled sweet-talkings?

If this chain keeps going, there is going to be even more turmoil down the road then there was with Alexis this January and going back to last summer. Players that have been here for years, like Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny – they can take stuff like this. They love the club.

Players like Lacazette and (again, assuming) Aubameyang – they can’t. And they shouldn’t be asked to.
