Former Arsenal target Thomas Lemar has turned down a contract extension with Monaco, but do the Gunners still care about Lemar or is this old news?

There was a time when Thomas Lemar was the everything for Arsenal. He was everything that we ever wanted, mostly because he was the only player who felt any bit realistic. And for the Gunners, realism is the main factor that goes into transfers.

Or at least that’s how things were.

Nowadays, no one appears to be off limits. Am I still riding high on the January transfer window? You bet. But that will tend to happen when you secure the best statistical striker in the world of football, so, yeah.

Not just that, but the Gunners spent a minimal amount of money on their vast improvements, which, from a business standpoint, has to make Stan Kroenke just thrilled.

In the midst of all of this improving, Thomas Lemar, the Monaco man that was nearly Arsenal’s biggest capture of all time, has turned down a new contract from the French side and, supposedly, this puts Liverpool and our beloved Gunners back on alert that he is still searching for a Premier League move.

Maybe this sounds snobbish, but this in no way excites me like it might have months ago. Now that we have proven, finally, at long last, that pretty much no one is off limits, paying £90m for Lemar just seems unnecessary.

There is no doubting the skill that Lemar has, even in a down year, as he is currently in the midst of. But with the current stock that the club has, particularly in the creative department, it’s a massive waste of money.

Plus, with the need for a true winger or two, Lemar doesn’t even fit that billing as truthfully, he is more of a creative midfielder. He lacks the pace to be a true winger. There are better wingers available, take for instance Carrasco, who is a blazer. There are better attacking midfielders, take for instance Nabil Fekir, who would serve so may purposes.

I can’t recall a time where a missed transfer has gone from such a clear necessity to not much more than a stab in the dark. Unless the price on Lemar drops drastically, there isn’t much need for the Gunners to get back into the transfer race for the Frenchman. And honestly, that feels pretty good.
