Arsenal have signed a brand new deal with Fly Emirates worth £200m across five years. This new influx should lead to two immediate breakthroughs.

Arsenal were falling further behind the financial times with their outdated deal with Fly Emirates. Other top Premier League teams were making twice what the Gunners were making on their shirt deals, but the red and white took a step forward by agreeing to a new five-year deal with the long-time sponsor, worth £200m.

On the grand scheme, it doesn’t mean all that much. According to the numbers, this just means as additional £10m per year compared to what they were making from the deal. But that somewhat small figure can be used to make two major inroads.

Both of the inroads involve new contracts for players that we really can’t see let go. And, surprisingly, these are the only two major players currently in a pickle.

These two players are Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere. The former has another year and the later just a few more months, but the pertinence is about the same and we should be expecting deals soon, lest we enter into a similar situation as we faced this year.

Which no one wants again. Ever.

As it stands, Ramsey makes just over £5m a year and Jack Wilshere makes just over £4m a year. Thinking from the financial side of things, Ramsey absolutely deserves a raise. His £110,000 a week needs to go damn near up near £200,000 or so.

Wilshere, meanwhile, is a mixed bag, because an incentive program in his contract makes so much sense, but negotiating that can’t be easy.

The thing is that the Gunners are still looking for ways to pay off Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s wages as well as Mesut Ozil’s new wages. Aubameyang’s alone is at £8m a year, which takes up most of that new shirt deal. The Gunners got a £1m a year cut by swapping Alexis for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but a £200,000 a week pay raise for Ozil wipes out all the room made by the new Emirates deal.

Leaving Ramsey and Wilshere out there, still needing new contracts while everyone else gets the dough they deserve.

A raise for Ramsey would run the Gunners about £4m a year, which should be chump change for a club that makes as much as Arsenal does, but I won’t pretend to know the financials behind it. It’s Wilshere that is the big question mark because here we are in February and all we have are assurances that he wants to stay.

This new shirt deal is cool, I guess, if not a bit underwhelming. We need to see some progress made from it, but unfortunately, that progress may be retroactive, as it is used to pay for our new signings.
