Arsenal may have gotten past their first contract predicament, but another looms, and Aaron Ramsey may find himself better off excelling elsewhere.

Aaron Ramsey had long been my No. 2 at Arsenal, but with Olivier Giroud now vacated, Ramsey steps up into the No. 1 spot and Granit Xhaka moves into the No. 2. What can I say, I know how to pick them.

Ramsey was among the throngs that was less than thrilled with how things were going against Manchester City, but he was simultaneously among the few that felt they could do something about it. And even though it never came off, he showed, yet again, that he is a difference maker when it counts.

Ramsey has been our best player this year. Hands down. Sure, Nacho Monreal has had his burst of stardom and Mesut Ozil has been great, but Ramsey, throughout his injuries, has been the best.

Which is just in time for him to seek a new contract, as his runs out at the end of next season. Now 27 years old, Ramsey is at a definitive stage in his career. He has played the hero more than anyone else in the current Arsenal team and he can play the hero countless times more if we can lock him down.

The problem, however, is that he, like many others, may be getting disenchanted.

Ramsey has long spoken about how much he owes the club and Arsene Wenger for sticking with him through his horrific leg break and giving him a fresh start on his career, which he took. While there is no mathematical equation to determine if someone has paid back a figurative debt, it pains me to say that Ramsey has.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

From this point forward, Ramsey can do as he pleases, he owes no one anything.

And that’s what scares me. When Ramsey flirted with Barcelona around two years ago, I knew what would happen if he left. He would be absolutely superb. Because when he is at his best, in a competent side, he is one of the best in the damn world. Look what he did for Wales, for instance.

Now, it’s even scarier. Because all lingering doubts surrounding Ramsey have been expelled, even for the stingiest of naysayers. Ramsey is a class midfielder who, when healthy, can’t be stopped. Against City, he was dicing the baby blue defense and innovating in sparkling new ways that no one else had the tenacity to attempt.

It didn’t always come off, but when it did, it showcased just how much of an inventive mind he is.

If Ramsey leaves, he will have his choice where he goes and wherever that may be, he is going to become the world class midfielder, the true world beater, that he could be at Arsenal if they can get their act together.
