Arsenal are entering a similar world of being “held hostage” by a player demanding higher wages, but for Aaron Ramsey, the scary part is that he could actually leave.

There are certain Arsenal players that are just difficult to picture in the kit of another club. Aaron Ramsey is one of them. A Gunner since he was 17, Ramsey was always going to be something special.

It was that awful leg break that spoiled two years of his career and the accompanying abuse he got on his return from injury that left he scrounging for support. But that support was always found in Arsene Wenger, who never gave up on the Welshman.

Ramsey has spoken at length about how much he owes to Wenger and to the club for never giving up on him. That is certainly a debt that is difficult to pay back.

However, in my estimation, he has absolutely paid back his debt in full. He has been the hero in two FA Cups, he has waded through the bad times, always pushing towards the good. He has been used out of position, despite clear indications of what he needs to succeed.

Ramsey is 27 now and all of this was part of the growing process. The fact that he did so much for Arsenal during that growing process merely helps him out in the present day. Because now, not even I can peg him for a villain if he decides he isn’t happy at this club anymore, or if he needs to move on.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

After all, despite two FA Cups, his aspirations are higher and as of right now, those aspirations look like they will be unanswered at Arsenal. So many players have left to win bigger trophies and accomplished those goals that it’s plain to see why it keeps happening.

Ramsey has been the Gunner’s best player this year. It’s not even really that close. As long as he is healthy, he is one of the best all-purpose midfielders in the game. I’ve said it before, but I will say it again, he could become an absolute monster at a more consistent club that isn’t so divided internally.

That is what scares me the most – that he could actually leave. With Alexis and Mesut Ozil, it was conceivable that they could leave, but Ramsey has been here for a decade. He had so much to bring to the club and I’d hate to see all of that lost to a club more capable of utilizing him.
