Arsenal superstar Mesut Ozil has put himself in the spotlight with his new deal, which places him in a new position that he wasn’t in prior to extending.

Arsenal Football Club is in a spot of bother in that they really don’t know where to turn anymore. Arsene Wenger insists he can turn the club around, superstars abound and there are a good deal of fighters on the club.

Where it all goes wrong is in the confidence department. Or so it seems, it is quite difficult to diagnose a team that has so much but appears to have so little.

Confidence has always been a massive problem with the Gunners. In the present day, so many of their ranks require a full tank of confidence before they can produce anything and if they don’t have that, they are liabilities.

Confidence is tricky, because where do you find it when you need it most? You can look to other people, you can look within yourself, you can stumble into some good luck and remember what you’re capable of doing.

All of this can be helped out by the resident superstar and highest paid player of the club, Mesut Ozil. Who better to inspire his team mates than the German magician capable of dicing any defense with the slice of a foot? Who better to help his team mates “stumble” into some good luck than a man capable of playing every pass imaginable to perfection?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Whether he likes it or not, Ozil is in a position where he doesn’t necessarily have to be an outspoken leader, or a gladiator on the pitch, but he should at the very least be able to hold himself to a consistent standard of play. To be a standard bearer, of sorts.

There isn’t much belief in the Arsenal way right now, and that has to fall to the players as well. The only guy who has signed a new contract recently is Ozil. Ozil believed in something here. Something he had to have seen as a positive indication of where things were going.

He has to help other guys see that. It sounds kind of silly, but he is our best hope. If he had confidence in the Arsenal way, this massive, renowned superstar, then why shouldn’t up-and comers like Alex Iwobi?

The problem is that Ozil has not been at a consistent level of play. He hasn’t been a standard bearer. He is a confidence-required player as well and if he doesn’t have it, how can he instill it in others?

Hence the plight. Ozil could be such a solution for this club if he wasn’t already part of the problem.
