Arsenal are suddenly linked with Luka Modric, which feels equal parts impossible and totally realistic. Let’s try to wrap our heads around this.

It wouldn’t be a day without a totally random transfer rumor popping up in the Arsenal news sphere. This time it is Don Balon reporting that Luka Modric is on the verge of making a sensational and question-riddled move to the Gunners for a massive £53m fee, which would be about the cost of a Hector Bellerin.

Modric is 32-years-old, is steadily seeing his playing time decrease at Real Madrid, and has prior Premier League experience at Tottenham Hotspur, where he launched his name onto the big stage.

On one hand, this seems absolutely impossible. That’s a ton of money for someone past his prime that would essentially do exactly what Santi Cazorla had done, and have about as many years to do it as a healthy Cazorla would.

That said, I spent a good deal of time trying to wrap my head around this proposed deal and honestly, it’s not at all impossible. In fact, I completely believe that it could happen based on recent events and the desire of Arsene Wenger to go out on top.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Think about it – since the turn of the year, the Gunners have landed Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, both of whom are nearing 30. They also extended Mesut Ozil, who is in the same boat.

There is a clear emphasis on winning in the here and now and loading up on players who have experience winning things.

Now why would that be? Most likely, it’s because Wenger is going to stay another year to try to win it all one last time and, in order to do that, he will need a crap ton of improvements that he can’t necessarily wait for. He will need immediate impact players with experience galore and in Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Ozil and Modric, he would have a quadruplet of undeniable players, the latter three all fit the mold of the prototypical Arsene Wenger player.

In the past, this would have been another moot transfer rumor with no actual bearing, and perhaps it still is. But with Wenger’s contract running down and the recent transfer activity, the impossibility of landing Modric dissipates pretty quick and is replaced by hardcore evidence that there is nothing impossible about this – in fact, it is quite the opposite.

That said, I’m not sure I’m entirely about overspending for a 32-year-old past his prime, but that all depends on how much money this club will have at its disposal in the coming transfer window.
