Arsenal: Luke Shaw would fit right into the present and future
By Josh Sippie
Luke Shaw has lost some of his glimmering potential since falling under Jose Mourinho, but Arsenal can rescue him, and he’d fit right in.
Arsenal have a nice situation at leftback. It’s one of the few positions where they have a secure amount of depth at. Between Nacho Monreal‘s steadiness and Sead Kolasinac‘s rambunctiousness, there is a lot to bank on.
So why would we need another?
Well, to quote Arsene Wenger (roughly, I don’t remember the exact quote) – for an exceptional player, the price doesn’t matter. And I’ll contribute my own addition and say the position doesn’t matter either.

Luke Shaw has been continuously mistreated by Jose Mourinho and the Portuguese’s blatant immaturity toward this young, 22-year-old man. He was outspokenly and publicly rude to Shaw yet again, and since it has happened before, you’d have to imagine that this probably isn’t the last time.
All the while, Shaw has not had many opportunities this year and seems stuck in his progression. When he came over from Southamtpon, he was meant to be England’s answer at leftback – the long-term answer, but injuries and Jose have gotten in the way.

Arsenal have been there to spot United “rejects” a second chance before. They did it, and are still doing it, with Danny Welbeck, for instance. Even Henrikh Mkhitaryan was falling into the “rejects” category.
Luke Shaw would not come in at a position of need – or would he? Despite Monreal’s increased relevance, he is still losing his speed as he ages and his longevity is up for debate. After that, there is Kolasinac, who, while immensely promising, is also an injury risk and inconsistent yet.
Shaw would fit in nicely alongside Kolasinac as a long-term competitor. His minimal playing time as of late gives him so much more to fight for and even if he does’t get it right away, just being able to compete for it would be an upgrade over United’s shenanigans.
Plus, there is that added English connection. Both Rob Holding and Calum Chambers are early-20s English defenders, the latter of with played a significant amount of minutes with Shaw when they were teenagers at Southampton.
There are so many reasons to go after Shaw that bury the fact that he plays a surplus position with the club. Surpluses come and go and I don’t reckon Monreal is going to be as relevant as he is for much longer.
