Arsenal’s link to Robert Lewandowski is flimsy at best, but, practically, replacing either of our strikers with him makes the strike force so much better.

Arsenal don’t need another striker. They proved that when they (foolishly) sold Olivier Giroud. Clearly there is no room for a third striker at this club, unless that third striker’s name is Danny Welbeck, because he isn’t really a striker.

As such, hearing the links to a “sensational” move to Robert Lewandowski are purely that – sensational. And little more.

But setting aside all the doubt, let’s talk about how a move for the Pole would actually make a lot of sense in more than just hindsight. Because there is a clear practicality to having a guy like Lewandowski (no kidding), even if that means throwing the striker situation into a game of musical chairs.

Arsenal have acquired two new strikers in the past year and sold one. It’s already a frantic mess trying to get everyone settled simultaneously while shifting personnel – which figures to carry on into the summer.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The problem, as has been discussed ad nauseum, is that both strikers currently in the Gunners employ are rather similar. They make runs off the ball. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is faster and Alexandre Lacazette is more of a finisher, but aside from the few differences, they are all quite similar.

That was the point of my recent article, questioning why we got Aubameyang in the first place. It’s not that he isn’t quality, of course he is quality. It’s that he is so similar to Lacazette. Variety is needed and if Giroud wasn’t “good enough” to be that variety, then Lewandowski can be.

Again, rather than make this all about hindsight and how we should have gone all in on the Pole to combine with either of our current two strikers, let’s consider that either could be sold now to accommodate the best striker in the world.

The reason I admire Lewandowski rather than, say, Karim Benzema, is because Lewandowski wants a new challenge. He wants to step out of his comfort zone and become even better. I’m not sure why he hasn’t done that already, as Bayern are a bully of a team, but hey, if it’s the case now, then why can’t we shift some things around. We can pawn off Lacazette or Aubameyang, and revel in the new partnership.

It doesn’t even matter which one. I’d take either. Pair them with Lewandowski, who is more a Giroud type, and finally have the dynamic duo that we need to have. But what a wild thought that is.
