Arsenal have signed Mohamed Elneny to a new deal, which literally has no drawbacks, but people are digging for some. This is all too predictable.

Nothing gets Arsenal fans riled up quite like any sort of action whatsoever. Literally, anything that happens, no matter the circumstance, there are going to be about 50% of fans pissed off and 50% smiling and nodding.

Mohamed Elneny‘s new deal is a fairly tame ordeal. He isn’t going to be making bookoo bucks or taking up a lot of game time. He is a solid squad player, the likes of which every team out there has. Yet there are still people out there barking about how this shows a lack of ambition.

Dumb. That’s really all I have to say, but I’ll say more.

Elneny isn’t the kind of player who is going to change the fate of a team. He’s only 25, so there may be time to change that, but for the sake of this argument, I want to go ahead and assume that Elneny will only improve in small increments and always be this rotational option that holds down the fort in lesser competitions and can also fill in in a pinch.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Assuming that is the case, we need a player like him. We need a player that is going to be 100% dedicated to the cause no matter what that cause is. Elneny has never once questioned his spot at Arsenal. He hasn’t asked for anything he doesn’t have.

He took no time to sign a new deal because he loves what he is at the club and he loves the club itself. I don’t care in what little capacity you think he should be used, that is the kind of player that can make a difference in a bigger picture than just match-by-match.

Bigger picture as in a role model for players to show what it is to grind day in and day out, take what you have and make the most of it. And, if the most isn’t enough, then try to raise the ceiling a bit. But this is what Elneny does.

Ambition has nothing to do with it. This Arsenal midfield is such a question mark and to have someone like Elneny, who you can fall back on in a “worst case scenario” well, there is a good deal of security to be found in that. Because Elneny is a 6 or a 7 every single match.
