Calum Chambers or Rob Holding? Both are quality young defenders, but only one can start for Arsenal. Which one would you pick? I’ll break it down for you.

Arsenal has two very talented young center-backs within their ranks, but which one should start? With only one spot for both, it becomes a question of which one has more faults.

This club never really has too many problems when it comes to too many defenders. They always seem to never purchase or develop enough, but this season is different. It’s different in the way that they have actually developed two very talented young defenders.

Two young British defenders, who on their day would slot into most teams in the Premier League. Both players are tall and strong with good ball control and distribution out from defense. But with only one spot open it is now crunch time for both defenders.

Calum Chambers is the longest-serving defender between the two of them joining in 2014 from Southampton. He was a promising young right-back when he joined and has since found a new home in the middle of the defense.

Chambers has put in some stellar performances this season. He has shown glimpses of being an Arsenal regular and a solid option for Arsene Wenger’s team. Chambers could be one for the future or Wenger could loan him out once again. Chambers went out on loan to Middlesbrough last season proving that he could be a proper starter in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Rob Holding has waited patiently in the wings for an opportunity to prove himself. Holding has had plenty of chances in the Europa League and in the cup matches. He played well marshaling Diego Costa in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last season.

He looks like a real defender, but he also has his moments of lapses of concentration. At the beginning of this season, Arsenal was short of defenders and had to throw him in the fire. That day at Anfield must have been a nightmare for young Holding.

Who starts for Arsenal?

With two young British defenders within the club, Arsene Wenger has some sorting out to do. He has too many defenders for once. The Gunners also linked with defenders so maybe both will have to go to find the regular first-team football. Maybe to a Championship side or the Bundesliga would be a good fit for either.

They need to get some experience and some confidence. Selling either would be disastrous for the club and players involved. Only time will tell what Wenger has in mind for both Chambers and Holding.
