Arsenal: Thomas Tuchel reports as meaningless as the links

Arsenal managerial “target” Thomas Tuchel as reportedly decided to join PSG. But do we really care? Not at all. Just like the link to Arsenal in the first place.

Arsenal fans are going to have to go through the seven circles of hell in regards to all the tabloid rumors covering who they may or may not sign as their next manager. Seeing as how Arsene Wenger’s future is still largely up in the air, it’s a clear attention-grabber, reporting anyone as a link.

Thomas Tuchel was one of the stronger links in recent months. The young German manager was let go of Borussia Dortmund mid-tailspin and, seeing as how he was a Dortmund man, it was only a matter of time before he was tied to a now-Dortmund-heavy Emirates.

Tactically speaking, it made sense. The idea of a young manager who is willing to bend his tactics and beliefs and acclimate to changing times is obviously pretty appealing to a fanbase that’s more than a bit weary than stubborn Wenger, who only realized you don’t need to have a set four defenders about a year ago.

But the links were flimsy. Reports indicated that he had already agreed on a deal to come to Arsenal before Wenger had even formally announced what his plans were. It was all a hopeful mess, for those that wanted Wenger gone, and a quizzical mess to everyone else.

The end result was that it was just a mess for everyone, no matter their point of view. A meaningless mess tying another manager to a job that wasn’t even open.

And now Tuchel has supposedly taken the PSG job that is now going to be open following Unai Emery’s departure. This is, of course, being floated about like a missed chance for the Gunners, and maybe so, but managers come and go, and one more candidate that gets away isn’t going to make that much of a difference.

Here’s the lowdown – Arsene Wenger doesn’t know what he is doing yet. He may have parameters “if such and such happens, I stay. Otherwise, I go,” but in all likelihood, it’s shaping up like he’s staying for another year. He’s now the beneficiary of an infusion of talent that he hasn’t had in years. So why wouldn’t he?

Spoiler alert: With Wenger staying another year, we aren’t going to have another manager lined up. And if we do, it’s sure as hell not going to be “leaked” because no manager is going to agree to a deal for the following summer. That’s silly.

But that’s okay. Thomas Tuchel is a non-factor for Arsenal. He never has been a factor. The links were meaningless and if he does take the PSG job, good for him. Good luck. Arsenal will be just fine.
