Arsenal’s contract saga of Wilshere has been very public, but with a run of poor performances and with constant inconsistencies with his game, the refusal of a pay rise might be the right option after all.

The battle with Jack Wilshere has always been within himself.  After a career with Arsenal which started off fantastically, it has stalled for the England International since his 2010/11 breakthrough season.

With a career plagued with injuries, follows inconsistent performances and Wilshere’s recent performances have been questionable to say the least. Much more is expected from the man tipped to be the future captain of the club.

Many have associated Wilshere with Welshman Aaron Ramsey, but the battle between the long serving Gunners has always resulted in Ramsey overcoming Wilshere. Looking back the Welshman has had a brighter career and more highlights compared to the often injured Englishman.

That is evident now more than ever, with Ramsey flying high and scoring and assisting regularly, Wilshere has dipped in form quite drastically. With both fighting for new contracts and a bigger wage, to secure a longer future at the club, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea investing more in Ramsey.

Coming on as a substitute in Arsenal’s 3-2 win against Southampton, Wilshere struggled to make any sort of positive impact on the game, instead making headlines for an altercation with Jack Stephens. Some may even point the finger at Wilshere for not tracking back when Charlie Austin scored Southampton’s second goal making it 2-2.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Against CSKA Moscow, Wilshere played among side Ramsey and Granit Xhaka as a midfield three, but managed to be overshadowed by this midfield partners.

Wilshere made little impact during the win, only managing to win 1 duel out of 4 and a successful pass rate of 73% of 30 passes. With no shots on registered in 74 minutes, it’s obvious he had a game to forget.

It was the same story during the 3-0 win against Stoke City. The Gunners were very lucky to come out victors that day, displaying one of the worst halves of football during that first half. Wilshere definitely picked up during the second half, but was rated second best compared to Mohamed Elneny’s performance.

Elneny has been impressing with his performances as of late. The Egyptian has had heads turning with each passing game, putting in man of the match quality performances and shining in the midfield. With Elneny being the talking point of the midfield, it really indicates Wilshere’s lack of form right now. Even Granit Xhaka who has been poor all season, has put in well appraised shifts within the midfield.

The argument has always been can Wilshere make it to be an Arsenal great? now at 26 years of age, after 2 loans, 3 long term injuries and only 14 career goals in more than 190 appearances it may be time to accept that the club are right to refuse Wilshere’s wage demands, being fearful of missing out on Champions League once again which would heavily effect the club financially.
